Artificial intelligence (AI), while a boon in many sectors, has also become a tool for fraud, especially in the insurance industry. A recent investigation by Allianz in the UK has revealed a 300% increase in fraudulent car insurance claims involving doctored photos and videos, created using generative AI features of photo editing apps. These manipulated images, known as "shallowfakes," are often convincing enough to pass as evidence of non-existent damages in insurance claims.

In a notable example, Liverpool Victoria (LV=), a subsidiary of Allianz, detected a fraudulent claim involving a work van. The claim included images of the van with a cracked bumper, mimicking a photo found on social media but altered to show damage. This discovery was part of a broader trend that has led to significant financial implications for insurers and policyholders alike.

Allianz has responded to this uptick in AI-facilitated fraud by partnering with Clearspeed, a voice analytics tool, to enhance fraud detection capabilities while expediting the processing of legitimate claims. This partnership reflects an essential shift in strategies as insurers adapt to counteract the sophisticated techniques employed by scammers using advanced technologies.
