California Governor Signs New Data Breach Law

Amid the flurry of high-profile intrusions at Target Corp., Home Depot Inc., SuperValu Inc. and a host of other retailers, California Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed legislation that will require companies that handle customer data to provide identity theft prevention services in the event of a breach. The governor signed into law AB 1710, which requires businesses in California to provide at least one year of credit monitoring and identity theft prevention services to customers who are affected by a data breach.
