Fluctuating homeowners insurance rates can cause policyholders to jump to conclusions about claims in their local area and their intuition is frequently misleading. Lightning strikes, fires, theft and liability claims are costly and affect the cost of homeowners insurance, but they are not the most frequent claims filed by policyholders.According to recent data released by Travelers Co., 25% of the companys U.S. homeowners insurance claims between 2009 and 2015 were for exterior wind damage. The data also showed that 19% of claims were a result of non-weather-related water damage, 15% were for hail damage and 11% were for weather-related water damage.
