ICW Group is searching for a Director of Commercial Underwriting! The purpose of this job is to develop underwriting strategy for commercial package products working closely with senior leadership and the product team to develop rates, rules and forms. The position plays a significant role in ongoing operations to offer property and casualty solutions for ICW clients. This is a hands-on role involved in underwriting for commercial package and collaborating with Actuarial and Systems requiring extensive experience, a thorough understanding of the marketplace and excellent underwriting judgement to set the direction of the division for underwriting profitability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Drives and manages a profitable and growing book of business.

  • Oversees underwriting and collaborates with the product team including guideline and form development, filings, rates and marketing to delivers profitable growth of the business line through retention of existing relationships, new customer acquisition, and product innovation.
  • Sells, services and helps build a producer force that can produce a profitable and growing book of business.
  • Drives profitable sale of the Company's products including increasing sales of existing products, and the introduction and selling of new products as they are developed.
  • Contributes to the strategy and leadership of the department.

Prospects and develops new business ensuring continuing value to the business.

  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to support ICWs entry into the package market.
  • Prospects and prequalifies new producers to determine working relationship.
  • Evaluates marketing research to help identify opportunities for management, product enhancements, new distribution channels and new geographic markets with growth potential.

Establishes and maintains written procedures for business processes, ensuring compliance with Company Risk Policy and insurance regulatory frameworks.

  • Leads Commercial Underwriting in compliance and coordination with internal processes.
  • Reviews assumptions that are used in pricing models and works with Actuarial to continuously refine the models. Provides recommendations on account level pricing.
  • Keeps alert to industry changes, including ISO Circulars, forms and coverage changes.
  • Oversees all underwriting guidelines and ensures proper updating where necessary.

Delivers superior customer service through collaborative relationships.

  • Interacts with agents and policyholders as needed to resolve issues. Communicates decisions effectively and resolves agent/customer concerns promptly.
  • Presents Agency Management solutions to agency principals and ICW management team.
  • Works with the Customer Experience team to analyze data and develop training, programs, and processes that focus on continuous improvement of the customer experience.

Develops and supervises a team of underwriting professionals.

  • Provides daily direction to underwriting team. Communicates Mission, Values and other organization operating principles to direct and/or indirect reports.
  • Establishes and maintains the overall work cadence and, in partnership with department leadership, ensures performance and outcomes strive for excellence in delivery and customer experience. Ensures that the entire team is engaged and that leadership practices encourage development, recognition and retention.
  • Establishes and adheres to hiring criteria, on-boarding and training requirements for incoming staff.
  • Oversees the performance management and development process for the team and performs performance management duties, development planning and coaching for direct reports.
  • Acts as a resource for entire department to answer questions and solve complex problems.
  • Manages department budget, technology and other resources, workload and customer requests for underwriting services. Ensures adherence to all Company policies and procedures and Compliance responsibilities
  • Ensures data quality, adherence to IT security guidelines, profitability and other risk-related metrics for self and members of the team.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises employees within the underwriting team and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company policies and applicable laws. These responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; conducting performance and salary reviews; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; coaching, mentoring, and developing team members to further their skills and knowledge; creating and monitoring development plans; setting performance expectations/goals; forecasting staffing needs and planning for peak times and absences; enforcing department policies and procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university required with a major or emphasis in Business, Economics, Finance or related field. Masters Degree preferred. Minimum 8 years of Commercial Property & Casualty underwriting or product experience required. Strong casualty background preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Current drivers license required. Industry-specific study and designations (CPCU, AU) a plus.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Strong knowledge of underwriting principles and products in a commercial property & casualty insurance environment. Demonstrated ability to service the Companys customers and build and maintain relationships with production sources. Ability to apply fundamental Underwriting concepts, practices, procedures in area of specialization. Ability to read and interpret documents such as submissions, loss control reports, and standard policy form/endorsements. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience working with cross-functional teams. Excellent public and interpersonal speaking skills. Ability to effectively present information to a wide range of audience levels both internal and external using a variety of methods. Advanced proficiency Insurance policy systems such as Policy Decisions, use of ISOnet and Salesforce. Proficient with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Visio, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to apply principles of logic to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Advanced analytical, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
