Hospitals are not entitled to place liens on insurance benefits paid by insurers to third party service providers, the Tennessee Supreme Court has ruled. The case involved a man, Kevin L. Holt, who was injured in a car crash in Arkansas in 2006 and first taken by ambulance to a hospital in that state. He was later transferred to the Regional Medical Center (owned by Shelby County Health Care Corp.) in Memphis, Tenn., where he incurred almost $34,000 in expenses.
