A surprise pre-dawn coating of ice from freezing rain sent cars and trucks sliding on Wednesday and led to a pileup of at least 31 vehicles on a major St. Louis highway, police said. It took nearly five hours to clear Interstate 64 (Highway 40) following a series of accidents in the area, the worst of which took place in the east bound lanes just before 5 a.m. local time about five miles from the famous Gateway Arch.
