A 1,776-acre grass fire is burning south of Silver City, N.M., on Highway 90 at mile marker 38, and at least 12 homes have been damaged or destroyed. Officials said the Quail Ridge Fire is human-caused.The fire is 20 percent contained. Fire activity through the morning was light, giving crews a chance to patrol and deal with the many hotspots remaining. Air tankers were used upon their arrival at the fire to supplement containment lines and further protect structures that would be in the path of the fire if it escaped.
