With ferocious winds, pounding rain and a 500-mile reach, Hurricane Irene on Saturday began its slow march up the Eastern Seaboard, causing power outages to nearly 900,000 homes and businesses and leaving at least six people dead. The storm that slammed into Cape Lookout, N.C., Friday evening is expected to cause major flooding and extensive damage throughout the weekend. At 7 p.m. ET Saturday, it was 35 miles southeast of Norfolk, Va. with sustained winds of up to 80 mph. Storm-related deaths were reported in North Carolina, Florida and Virginia.
