Engagement ring leads to insurance fraud arrest

A former Durham resident has been charged by the North Carolina Department of Insurance for making a false insurance claim in the case of an engagement ring. Nathan Daniel Cooperman, 40, of 218 First Avenue, New York, N.Y., has been charged with one count each of insurance fraud and obtaining property under false pretense, according to a news release from the Department of Insurance. Department of Insurance investigators allege that, on Aug. 25, 2007, Cooperman submitted a false claim to Travelers Claims Hartford Auto for the loss of a $50,000 engagement ring stolen during a burglary of his Durham residence.
