Mesa residents are asking whether their floodwaters could have somehow been prevented after several retention basins overflowed on Monday, sending runoff streaming down neighborhood streets and into people’s homes."I think there needs to be some investigation into what happened," said Mesa resident Cheryl Becker. "Why did this happen? What went wrong?" Mesa recorded 4.41 inches of rain on Monday - a single-day record. As many as 125 homes were damaged due to the sheer amount of rain in neighborhoods near Val Vista Drive and Hampton Avenue and 39th Street and the U.S. 60.
