Authorities say one person has died after an Amtrak passenger train struck a pickup truck in southwestern Illinois. Alton Fire Chief Mark Harris said the collision happened about 9:30 a.m. Sunday at a crossing in his city, just northeast of St. Louis. The crossing includes gates, bells and lights to alert cars to oncoming trains. Harris says witnesses reported seeing the truck driver go around warning gates. Photographs from the scene show the twisted wreckage of a vehicle lodged just under the front of the Amtrak locomotive.
