Multiple fire houses sent crews to respond to an early morning blaze that fully involved a Herkimer Street home. Calls for help from firefighters rang out after 5 a.m. Wednesday on the 400 block of Herkimer Street near Bird Avenue. After crews rushed to the scene, the fire spread to another nearby home, prompting firefighters to work on the defensive. “We came in with an aggressive, interior attack and had to evacuate,” Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield said. “It immediately went to a second alarm.” Fire jutted from the roof of one home as the house just next door appeared to be fully enveloped in flame.
