Wildfires Prompt Kansas Governor To Declare State Of Emergency

Governor Sam Brownback has declared a State of Disaster Emergency for an area of south-central Kansas threatened by major wildfires. A wildfire that began in Oklahoma on Tuesday spread into Kansas and burned more than 169,000 acres in Barber County. A statement from the Kansas Adjutant General’s office early Thursday declared the fire "under control" in Comanche County, but not yet in Barber County. It added voluntary evacuations have ended in the Lake City and Sun City communities. Barber County’s sheriff earlier called for voluntary evacuations in Sun City and Medicine Lodge.
