A mother and her 2-year-old son were trapped in their vehicle for about an hour Tuesday evening, July 12, after lightning struck a tree, causing it to crash onto their vehicle. The pair were heading northwest on Lansing Avenue near Taylor Street in the city of Jackson when the tree fell onto their vehicle, pinning them inside. Jackson firefighters, assisted by Blackman-Leoni Public Safety, used the Jaws of Life to cut the roof off the vehicle a Chevrolet Malibu and then proceeded to use a chainsaw to remove the tree from the car, which sustained major damage.
