48 Passengers Safe After Charter Bus Catches Fire

Forty-eight people had to evacuate a charter bus that erupted into flames and temporarily shut down southbound traffic on Interstate 85 near Buford on Friday afternoon. Gwinnett fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said the bus was one of three that were traveling south together on the interstate. He added that firefighters responded to the blaze on I-85 south near the Gravel Springs overpass at 5:36 p.m. “Crews arrived to find flames showing from the bus,” Rutledge said in a statement. “Firefighters were able to quickly deploy attack hose lines to extinguish the fire. All southbound lanes of the interstate were initially closed as firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.
