Active eruptions claimed dozens more homes over the weekend as a "robust channel" cut its way through Kapoho before reaching the sea. Talmadge Magno, Hawaii County Civil Defense administrator, said at least 159 homes have now been claimed by lava. Thats up from 87 on Friday. "Theres a lot of destruction," Magno said, adding that there are "a lot" more homes that were destroyed that arent included in the count. "Its like a flood its just pouring out, covering everything in its path. It looks like theres no stopping it." The latest estimate for the amount of land in lower Puna covered by lava: 7.7 square miles.
