People are trapped in their homes and horses and other large animals are being rescued after a mudslide near the River Fire burn scar.
According to Monterey County Regional Fire officials, heavy rain overnight caused mud and other debris to move through properties on River Road south of Salinas.
As of Wednesday morning, the hillside above River Road was still considered unstable.
Firefighters reported that some people were blocked in their homes. At least one person was sent to the hospital and an estimated 50 large animals are being rescued.
Mudslides near Salinas south of the Bay Area caused ‘mild to moderate’ damage to about two dozen rural ranch homes beneath hillsides scorched by the River Fire last August, said Dorothy Priolo with the Monterey County Regional Fire Protection District.
