At least one person is dead after a pileup in foggy morning conditions on Interstate 5 in Linn County, Oregon, on Wednesday.
The incident happened around 8 a.m. local time on a stretch of the interstate between Salem and Eugene, according to a news release from Oregon State Police.
Some 60 vehicles were involved, including an estimated 45 passenger cars and 15 to 20 commercial vehicles.
Tweets from both the State Police and the Oregon Department of Transportation said there were multiple crashes in heavy fog.
"The dense fog developed due to sinking warm air several thousand feet aloft trapping cool, moist air in the valley in what’s known as an inversion," weather.com senior digital meteorologist Jonathan Erdman said. "Wildfire smoke was also present in the area."
