A possible tornado struck neighborhoods in east Montgomery before dawn Wednesday, damaging homes, ripping down trees, and tossing vehicles.
An early assessment indicated several dozen homes were damaged, said Chip Hill, chief of staff for Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed. Hill was checking on the damage along Hollis Drive and Meriwether Road in a neighborhood off Taylor Road, not far from the East Chase shopping center.
‘Between 30 and 40 structures (were) damaged in an area probably less than a mile between Bell Road and Buddy Watson Park,’ Hill said. ‘Structural damage was substantial, but right now it’s a miraculous that only a couple of minor injuries have been reported.’
According to the Montgomery City/County EMA, a tornado warning was issued at 3:14 a.m. when radar identified a tornado in east Montgomery. It was reported at or near Taylor Road and moving east toward Waugh. Montgomery police were dispatched to multiple locations with reports of damage.
