The Professional Liability Underwriting Society turned the spotlight on its own industry here to puzzle out why property-casualty insurers are frequent targets for lawsuits over sales, underwriting and claims practices.

"Is there something wrong? Is there something that needs fixing?" asked William Bila, a partner with the law firm of Lord Bissell & Brook in Chicago.

Mr. Bila’s comments came during a session about insurance company errors and omissions claims that grappled with the "serious climate" of lawsuits, investigations and negative press bedeviling the insurance industry.

Mr. Bila raised the questions during a session at the annual meeting of Minneapolis-based PLUS, "Insurance Companies at the Alamo—Is the Industry Outgunned and Surrounded?"
