Insurer groups were looking forward to action by the Ohio State House of Representatives following Senate approval yesterday of an uninsured motorist reform bill.

Paul Blume, vice president for the American Insurance Association, midwest region, in a statement after the measure passed, said the Senate’s action is "a step in the right direction for consumers by bringing predictability back to the market."

The vote on the measure, Senate Bill 97, was 24 to 7. Sponsored by State Sen. Scott Nein, R-Middletown, the legislation would strip the current uninsured motorist statute of its mandatory power.

The bill would eliminate the mandatory offering of uninsured motorists' coverage on all auto insurance policies issued in Ohio.
