NU Online News Service, May 22, 12:28 p.m. EST --Results of a brief hailstorm earlier this month that sent baseball-sized chunks of ice crashing through windshields and rooftops in San Antonio, Texas is expected to cost insurers tens of millions in claims, an industry group said.

"The storm occurred in a heavily populated area and the damage was extensive to a number of businesses and homes," said Jerry Johns, president of Southwestern Insurance Information Service in Austin.

Damaged building structures accounted for most of the $100 million Mr. Johns estimated in losses, however, motor vehicles pelted with ice also sustained heavy damage, he said.

"Damage to the rooftops of homes and businesses seem to be the most common type of claim, however, there were also thousands of vehicles damaged," he said.
