# Mold Claims Surge This Year

Remediation service providers said a $32 million jury verdict for a mold damage claim is focusing national attention on an exposure that previously was little known- and it could result in more business for them.

At the same time, a huge increase in mold damage claims was reported by a spokesman for Farmers Insurance, who said mold claims have soared this year compared with last. 

"The case has galvanized the public to properly address the problem," said David Harvey, vice president of business and development at Tradewinds Environmental Restoration a Bay Shore, N.Y.-based firm that provides mold remediation services for several insurers.

A Texas jury earlier this moth slapped a Farmers Insurance Group subsidiary with a $32 million verdict for mishandling a mold claim filed by its policyholder, Melinda Ballard.
