If insurers thought concern over asbestos claims had evaporated, there is a growing chorus warning them about inadequate reserves in the face of mounting civil action.

Last week, in Philadelphia, Tillinghast Towers–Perrin announced it has increased its estimates for the total cost of asbestos losses to between $55 billion to $65 billion.

"This litigation is far from over," said Jennifer L. Biggs, an actuarial consultant for Towers-Perrin in their St. Louis office. "People thought the claims would trail off, but that is definitely not what has happened."

"It has been 25 years [since] the peak usage of asbestos and claims are higher than at any point in time," said Michael E. Angelina, an actuarial consultant in the firm’s Philadelphia office.
