In an effort to preserve the availability and affordability of home insurance in Texas, the state's insurance department has proposed that home insurers limit all future basic coverage for mold remediation at $5,000.

"A $5,000 limit is a spit in the Atlantic Ocean."

The proposal maintains current coverage for mold removal, but calls for rule changes that would allow home insurers to cap basic coverage for mold damage at $5,000. The insurers would then have to offer their policyholders the option to buy additional coverage in amounts equal to 25 percent, 50 percent, and 100 percent of policy limits.
