Auto insurance may not have been a headline issue in the New Jersey governor’s race, but exit polls yesterday show it played a key role in the election of Democrat James McGreevy, according to a political analyst.

"Of those people who felt auto insurance was the most important issue in the election, nearly seven of 10 cast their ballot for McGreevy, betting on him to be able to solve the problem," noted Jim McQueeny.

Mr. McQueeny, who is president of Winning Strategies advertising firm in Newark and a frequent commentator on New Jersey political issues, said the figures mean Mr. McGreevy will have to fulfill those voter expectations by doing more than cutting down on fraud.

Poll data show "a consumer angst not sated," he said. When voters listed their most important issues auto insurance ranked third.
