For exhausted firefighters in the Western U.S., the terrible spring of 2000 appears to be stretching into a long, dry summer as 10 large wildfires continue to burn in Arizona, California, Colorado and New Mexico, while another wildfire has scorched parts of northern Florida. So far, the fires have consumed more than 66,000 acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center, based in Boise, Idaho.

Insured loss estimates from these and other fires that have raged over the last two months in the West will most likely top $100 million in property losses before they are all extinguished, according to some insurance groups.

In early May, one of the costliest wildfires of the year erupted outside the city of Los Alamos, N.M., forcing the evacuation of 25,000 residents and destroying more than 260 homes.
