The Alliance of American Insurers has filed a suit against a Florida regulator for issuing a memo to auto repair body shops that the association says has retarded the use of generic auto parts by unfairly characterizing them as substandard.

Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Bob Crawford earlier this year notified all auto repair body shops that they were not to use generic aftermarket auto parts unless they met the specifications of original equipment manufacturer parts.

Failure to comply with the memo could result in a repair shop being fined or having its license revoked.

Mr. Crawford also directed repair shops to maintain records that showed that any generic part used in a repair did met OEM minimum standards.
