As the thousands of residents displaced in by the May wildfires near Los Alamos, N.M., begin moving back into their scorched neighborhoods, many insurers are reporting encouraging claim settlement figures and cheering a new federal law designed to help speed the recovery effort.

According to recent preliminary estimates from the Denver-based Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association (RMIIA), about 90 percent of the claims handled by the largest group of insurers in the area have been settled. As of mid-July, insurers handling claims from the Cerro Grande fire have paid out more than $50 million in property claims, said RMIIA‘s Carole Walker.

The latest official reports, released in late May from Property Claim Services, based in Rahway, N.J., placed the estimated insured loss figure at about $70 million, from a total of more than 6,000 property claims.
