Although the first half of the hurricane season was relatively quiet, experts at the National Hurricane Center are calling for slightly above-average numbers during the remainder of the season, which runs until November 30. That‘s the conclusion of an updated outlook released recently by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. According to the NOAA, an above-average hurricane season is characterized by at least two of the following three: a) at least eleven tropical storms, b) seven or more which typically become hurricanes, and c) three of more of which become major hurricanes.
Since September is the peak of Atlantic hurricane activity, the Independent Insurance Agents Association of New York is urging homeowners in coastal areas to take precautions now for storms that eventually make landfall. Inland homeowners should also be prepared for the risks associated with the kinds of inland flooding associated with tropical storms.
