A Milwaukee woman and her husband were awarded $25.3 million Monday after a Milwaukee County jury found that she lost all four of her limbs as the result of medical malpractice. Ascaris Mayo, a 53-year-old mother of four, had her limbs amputated in 2011 after a Strep A infection the kind that causes strep throat went undetected, ultimately leading to septic shock. Damage caused by the infection led to the amputations.
The case is almost sure to be appealed, because $15 million of the award was for pain and suffering and $1.5 million for her husbands loss of companionship.
