Dec. 1 marked the official end of a particularly active hurricane season in the Atlantic with 12 major tropical storms, including five Category IV hurricanes, setting the record for the most ever seen during one year.

Hurricane Bret kicked off the season in August, followed by four more Category IV storms, Cindy, Floyd, Gert and Lenny, all of which brought winds over 130 miles an hour. In the U.S., Hurricane Floyd was the most destructive, destroying or damaging 12,000 homes, costing U.S. insurers $1.8 billion, according to Property Claims Services, based in Rahway, N.J.

Of the 12 major storms this season, eight were named. The record for most hurricanes in one year was set in 1969, with 12. The largest number of severe hurricanes in one year was seen in 1950, with eight Category III or above storms being recorded.
