The tobacco industry has significant incentives to pursue insurance claims against their liability insurers, according to a July 9 report by Schroders Securities in London.

Indeed, insurance analysts at Schroders Securities told National Underwriter that it is clearly in the interests of tobacco companies shareholders for the tobacco companies to pursue coverage actions. The Schroders analysts asserted that because of the overwhelming evidence of significant insurance coverage, policyholders’ attorneys’ keen interest in pursuing such actions and the relatively low cost of pursuing coverage actions, tobacco companies could be forced into a coverage war.
