Allstate New Jersey Insurance Co. is suing 67 doctors, businesses, and individuals accused of participating in a huge auto insurance fraud ring that cost the company more than $14 million.

The company, whose national headquarters are in Northbrook, Ill., is seeking triple damages that would total more than $42 million.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Superior Court, follows raids by New Jersey insurance fraud prosecutors July 13 that led to nine arrests, and the seizure of records from seven medical facilities and of billing operations.

"If anyone needs additional justification for the auto reform law, the fraud problem in New Jersey provides it," said Richard C. Crist Jr., president of Allstate New Jersey.
