Hurricane Bret's last-minute decision to come ashore in largely unpopulated Kenedy County represented big savings for insurers. Although the hurricane was designated the biggest to hit Texas in 20 years, Bret caused barely enough insured property loss to clear Property Claims Services' catastrophe threshold of $25 million. PCS, based in Rahway, N.J., has estimated that insurers will pay $30 million from 13,000 claims, most resulting from interior rain damage caused by leaking roofs.

Expecting to find themselves directly in Bret's path, residents of Corpus Christi and Padre Island evacuated, and the Corpus Christi airport was shut down as a precautionary measure. The Aug. 22 hurricane made landfall between two urban centers, however, striking 40 miles south of Corpus Christi and 50 to 60 miles north of the Brownsville-Harlingen area.
