Every now and then I take a look back at my earlier Iconoclast columns, just to see if I was ultimately right or wrong in any particular image I was attempting to smash. One of those columns was that of February 1981, back when this publication was called Insurance Adjuster magazine. (I guess we had to change the name since nobody knew what an "adjuster" was any more.)

In that column, "The 21st Century Adjuster," I described Mr. I. M. Fair, CPU, a well-programmed computer that handled all of the claims for the Twenty-First Century Mutual Indemnity Co. Everything was automated, and the policyholder used a "smart card" that had all his policy information embedded in it. Robots appraised auto damage. Medical science had eliminated pain.
