Beretta, USA Corp. has filed suits against two of Chubb Group's companies -- Federal Insurance and Great Northern Insurance Co. -- seeking a declaratory judgement to recover defense costs. The suits, filed in federal court in Maryland, cite 13 other municipal lawsuits brought against Beretta to recover costs in treating gunshot victims.

Beretta is not the only gun manufacturer that municipalities are going after. Sixty other manufacturers, distributors and importers are also named, including major gun makers such as Colt, Smith & Wesson, Glock, Browning and Springfield.

In February, a Federal District Court jury in Brooklyn awarded $4 million in Hamilton v. Accu-Tek, finding that the marketing practices of nine gun manufacturers made them liable for shootings with illegally obtained handguns. Legal experts are viewing this as a test case against the gun makers.
