The Florida Senate voted Tuesday to approve legislation allowing insurers to pay claims electronically, sending the bill to Governor Jeb Bush. With the governor‘s expected signature, Florida will be the first state with such a law on the books.
"Electronic payment of claims is the wave of the future, and will be of great benefit to Florida consumers," said Dick Dorsey, AIA vice president, southeast region. "Consumers will get use of the funds instantly, rather than having to wait for a check to clear; and they don‘t have to worry about a check being delayed in the mail or stolen from their mailbox.

"In addition, it‘s estimated that 20 percent of American adults have no bank account of any sort, and so to cash a check they often have to pay commissions up to 25 percent to check cashing stores; smart cards and other forms of electronic payment eliminate this requirement," Dorsey added.
