TallahasseeFlorida Gov. Jeb Bush has signed into law a bill that is designed to protect insurance companies and businesses from frivolous lawsuits in the event of unforeseen computer failures stemming from date recognition in 2000.

Faced with rising concerns from companies that Y2K-related computer failures could result in litigation costs that exceed expenses from remediation efforts, Gov. Bush approved the legislation, which state lawmakers passed last month.

Specifically, the new law will allow companies only to be sued for direct economic damages in the event of Y2K failures. Other provisions in the law include a prohibition against class-action lawsuits in cases where each member of the class suffered less than $50,000 in damages.
