St. Paul Companies will eliminate its 60-member special investigative unit as part of previously announced cost-cutting moves to stay competitive, an executive at the company said.

The action follows concerns voiced by a regulator and industry officials that some insurance companies are retreating in their efforts to fight fraud—something St. Paul denies it is doing.

“We’re not reducing our emphasis on fraud,” said Paula Schlotfeldt, vice president of shared claims services for the St. Paul, Minn.-based company. She said a number of steps were planned to offset dropping the SIU.

In August, St. Paul said it was planning reductions aimed at cutting expenses by $100 million in 2000 and would eliminate 1,000 positions.
