During lake effect snow, the weather can vary from bands of locally
heavy snow to dry weather just a few miles away. Visibilities can
also vary greatly. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather,
visibility, and road conditions.
* WHAT...Dangerous travel conditions due to intense lake effect snow
possible. Localized snow rates in excess of 2 inches per hour,
event snow totals in excess of 6 inches, and northerly wind gusts
in excess of 35 mph are possible.
* WHERE...Lake IN and Porter Counties.
* WHEN...From late Sunday night through Monday afternoon.
* IMPACTS...Untreated roads, and especially bridges and overpasses,
may become slick and hazardous. The combination of snow rates in
excess of 2 inches per hour and northerly wind gusts in excess of
35 mph may greatly reduce visibility, especially along the Lake
Michigan shoreline.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Lake effect snow is often very localized,
with conditions varying from safe to dangerous across just a few
miles. The worst conditions are expected late Sunday night through
Monday morning, affecting the Monday morning commute.
