Chain-Reaction Vehicle Pileup Hits Fairbanks Expressway

More than 20 vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction accident Tuesday afternoon that shut down the westbound lanes of the Johansen Expressway. The accident occurred about 2:45 p.m. and closed the busy highway between Peger Road and University Avenue. Roads are icy after a series of rain and snow storms over the past week in Fairbanks. Alaska State Troopers received multiple calls about the pileup and immediately requested assistance from Fairbanks police, the University Fire Department and Fairbanks Fire Department, according to trooper Lt. Lonnie Piscoya. "I think the latest count was 22 vehicles in a clump."
