Jury awards Milwaukee woman $25.3 million in medical malpractice case

A Milwaukee woman and her husband were awarded $25.3 million Monday after a Milwaukee County jury found that she lost all four of her limbs as the result of medical malpractice. Ascaris Mayo, a 53-year-old mother of four, had her limbs amputated in 2011 after a Strep A infection — the kind that causes strep throat — went undetected, ultimately leading to septic shock. Damage caused by the infection led to the amputations.
The case is almost sure to be appealed, because $15 million of the award was for pain and suffering and $1.5 million for her husband’s loss of companionship.
