NY WC Board Resolves Most 9/11 Claims

The New York State Workers’ Compensation Board has settled about 80% of the 9,851 claims filed on behalf of workers injured or killed as a result of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, the agency reported this week. Of the 7,780 claims that have been resolved, 2,145 sought death benefits, 97% of which have been resolved, the board said. Board Executive Director Richard A. Bell praised the board’s staff as well as claimants, employers, attorneys and insurers for helping to efficiently resolve claims. In addition, the board is separately handling 500 claims by volunteers who say that they became sick or injured during the cleanup process at the WTC site. Officials are contacting claimants to determine the extent of their involvement and their injuries, a board spokesman said.
