Auto insurance rates have gone up across most of the U.S., with the national average premium increasing by 16% from 2022 to 2023. However, Wisconsin drivers saw one of the biggest increases of any state in the country. The average full coverage premium in the Badger State jumped 38.9% between 2022 and 2023, tacking an additional $475 onto annual car ownership costs on average. As a result, Wisconsinites are having to make extra room in their budgets or rethink their auto insurance policies.
According to data from Quadrant Information Systems, the average cost of a full-coverage auto policy in Wisconsin was $1,219 in 2022. Just one year later, that average has risen to $1,694. That’s nearly a 39% increase — a price escalation greater than increases seen in all but six other states in the U.S.
Some of the increase can be attributed to national trends that have pushed the average car insurance rate for the country up by 16% on the year. However, Wisconsin has some specific local factors that may have played a role in the state’s higher-than-average increase.
