Position Overview The Underwriting Director, Excess Casualty Construction will play a critical leadership role within ICW Specialty's Excess Casualty platform, with exclusive focus on construction-related risks in the E&S wholesale marketplace.

This role is responsible for setting and executing underwriting strategy, driving profitable growth, and building a high-performing underwriting team dedicated to complex construction exposures.

As a visible construction market leader, the Director will maintain deep relationships with wholesale brokers, ensure disciplined underwriting governance, and position ICW Specialty as a preferred excess capacity provider for middle-market and large construction accounts.

This role blends deep technical construction underwriting expertise, portfolio leadership, and people management within a data-driven, growth-oriented environment.

Equally important, this leader will serve as a cultural ambassador, fostering collaboration, accountability, inclusion, and innovation across ICW Specialty.

Success will be measured by sustainable portfolio performance, strong broker partnerships, and the ability to attract, develop, and inspire top construction underwriting talentwhile exemplifying ICW's values of integrity, teamwork, and growth.

Key

Responsibilities Strategic & Market Leadership Develop, refine, and execute the Excess Casualty Construction underwriting strategy, aligned with ICW Specialty's multi-year growth objectives.

Clearly define and communicate construction appetite, target classes, attachment points, limits, and deployment strategy across middle-market and large construction accounts.

Build and manage a profitable, diversified construction portfolio, aligned with strategic business plans, risk tolerance, and return objectives.

Possess deep expertise and a comprehensive understanding of Project-Specific and Wrap-Up (OCIP's, CCIP's) construction market landscape.

Serve as a senior market-facing leader with wholesale brokers, insureds, and reinsurance partners; act as a thought leader in excess construction casualty.

Monitor competitive dynamics, pricing trends, capacity shifts, and emerging construction risks to inform underwriting and product strategy.

Underwriting & Portfolio Management Oversee underwriting execution across all construction excess casualty accounts, ensuring adherence to guidelines, pricing adequacy, and governance standards.

Maintain accountability for portfolio profitability, risk selection, and balance by trade, project type, geography, attachment, and limits.

Identify trends and emerging loss drivers such as labor shortages, wrap-ups, defect exposure, wildfire, habitational risks, and large-loss severity.

Partner closely with actuarial, claims, and reinsurance teams to support analytics, pricing discipline, reinsurance structure, and portfolio optimization.

Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, internal audits, and corporate governance standards.

Team Leadership & Management Build, lead, and mentor a team of Excess Casualty Construction underwriters and underwriting assistants, fostering technical excellence and ownership.

Set clear performance expectations, provide coaching and development, and hold team members accountable to underwriting discipline and results.

Promote a culture of collaboration, inclusion, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Actively recruit, develop, and retain top construction underwriting talent, with a focus on long-term succession planning.

Cross-Functional Collaboration Partner with IT, Operations, and Finance to enhance underwriting workflows, data capture, reporting, and technology solutions specific to construction risks.

Act as a liaison between the construction underwriting team and ICW Specialty leadership, ensuring alignment, transparency, and shared accountability.

Candidate Profile

Experience & Expertise Bachelors degree required or equivalent combination of education and experience Minimum 10 years of underwriting and leadership experience in casualty insurance, with deep expertise in Excess Casualty Construction.

Proven success underwriting and managing complex construction risks, including contractors, developers, habitational, infrastructure, and specialty trades.

Demonstrated experience leading underwriting teams and managing profitable excess casualty portfolios.

Established wholesale broker relationships with a reputation for credibility, responsiveness, and execution.

Strong understanding of construction contracts, risk transfer, additional insured structures, loss severity drivers, reinsurance, and regulatory requirements.

Experience launching or scaling new construction-focused products or teams strongly preferred.

If hired at ICW Group, your final base salary compensation will be determined by factors unique to each candidate, including experience, education and the location of the role and considers employees performing substantially similar work.
