Debris Removal
Coverage for the cost to remove damaged property and rubble from the premises after a covered loss.
Debris removal insurance pays reasonable costs to haul away damaged building materials, personal property, and ash or rubble after a covered loss. Many property policies include a sublimit (additional percentage of the direct damage limit) specifically for debris removal.
When the combined cost of repair and debris removal exceeds limits, ordinance and law or increased cost endorsements may be needed. Environmental cleanup of pollutants may be excluded or sublimited separately.
Examples
After a fire, charred timbers and collapsed drywall must be cleared before reconstruction; debris removal costs $25,000 on top of $300,000 structure damage — the policy pays both subject to debris sublimits.
Common Misconceptions
Policyholders forget debris removal is not unlimited; heavy demolition after a hurricane can consume the allowance quickly. Hazardous material disposal may not be included.
