2003 Winter Storm Declared a CAT

Friday, February 21st, 2003 Property

The fierce winter storm that hammered 16 states across the Mid-Atlantic region and into New England has been declared a catastrophe by Insurance Services Office Inc. It is too early to know how much damage was done by the storm, but preliminary information shows there will be in excess of $25 million in damage, the minimum requirement for a catastrophe designation, said Dave Dasgupta, spokesman for the ISO. The near-blizzard conditions in many areas were linked to between 40 and 50 deaths, according to various news reports. The storm caused power outages, freezing pipes, and damage from wind, water and snow accumulation, Dasgupta said.
