Hazmat Crew Responds To Semi Crash Involving Toxic Sodium Cyanide

A hazardous materials spill closed Interstate 40 in both directions at the Interstate 40 and Interstate 55 split in West Memphis. West Memphis Fire Chief DeWayne Rose estimated the roads would reopen by 4 p.m., but as of this writing, the closure remains in effect. Rose said the Sodium Cyanide spill has been contained and it poses no threat to anyone in the area. Sodium Cyanide is extremely toxic. According to the Material Safety Data Sheet, Sodium Cyanide can emit an extremely toxic gas if it mixes with water or damp air. It is also toxic if touched or swallowed.
