Island Home Destroyed; Firefighters Hindered By Stored Ammo & Lack Of Hydrants

The Tybee Island Fire Department is investigating a fire that consumed a home on the island and sent mile-high plumes of white smoke through the air Wednesday afternoon. Tybee Island Fire and Southside Fire responded to the blaze that started around 4 p.m. on Pelican Drive. One home was destroyed and two others were damaged, said Tybee Island Fire Chief Ashley Fields. No one was inside either residence, and no injuries were reported. High winds and ammunition inside one of the homes intensified the fire and made it harder for firefighters, Fields said.
